Our destination: Liuluo Canyon, where concrete gives way to mud paths and skyscrapers are replaced by canopy giants. The trail immediately tested my balance &#8211; slippery rocks, sudden downpours, and vines that seemed to grab at my ankles. When we reached the first waterfall, I understood why they call this &#8220;water hiking.&#8221; We swam through turquoise pools <mark style=\"background-color:#fcb900\">up to 3 meters deep<\/mark>, jumping from rocks like kids. Took the <s>cheat way<\/s> cloud ladder up 1,800m &#8211; essentially a conveyor belt through misty jungle. Saved my legs for the final 500m vertical climb using chains bolted into the cliff face. At the summit, clouds parted to reveal a <em>sea of emerald peaks<\/em>. But the real showstopper was Jianling&#8217;s wild coastal climb &#8211; scrambling over boulders where Russian traveler Anna and I got momentarily lost before finding the summit cairn. Below us, the South China Sea stretched to infinity. After 2 hours on wooden boardwalks, we entered the <strong>primeval forest zone<\/strong> &#8211; a Tolkien-esque world of giant ferns and twisted roots. The final ascent required literal tree-root climbing and vertical ladders. At 1,867m, the &#8220;summit&#8221; was&#8230; anticlimactic. Just a small clearing littered with <s>other hikers&#8217; trash<\/s>. But the journey? Pure magic. Took 7 grueling hours with:<\/p>\n            \n\n            \n            <ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n                <li>Tire-tread gloves (lifesavers!)<\/li>\n                <li>2L water<\/li>\n                <li>Hiking poles<\/li>\n            <\/ul>\n            \n\n            \n            <figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-medium-font-size\">\n                <blockquote><p>&#8220;The mountain doesn&#8217;t care about your Instagram expectations. It simply exists, magnificent in its indifference.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n            <\/figure>\n            \n\n            \n            <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Days 8-9: Qiongzhong &#8211; Waterfall Hunter&#8217;s Paradise<\/strong><\/p>\n            <p>Baihualing Forest Park felt like walking through a rainforest theme park &#8211; in the best way. Followed the circuit: Thousand-year Banyan \u2192 Sky Mirror Walkway \u2192 <mark style=\"background-color:#7ad03a\">300m jungle slide<\/mark> (!) \u2192 Hundred Flowers Waterfall. The real treasure was Feishuiling&#8217;s hidden cascades near Wanling Town. Swam under curtains of falling water so cold it stole my breath. But the highlight was MeiHua Valley&#8217;s <strong>canyoning adventure<\/strong>. Waded\/swam through limestone corridors wearing rented life jackets (\u00a55). At &#8220;The Bathtub&#8221; &#8211; a natural rock pool &#8211; we floated like astronauts in zero-G.
